MP Ahmed Saleem calls on the government to impose pay cuts on public officials, political appointees, president and Parliament members.
Speaking today during an online parliament session Saleem opposed passing the MVR 4.2 Billion emergency fund. He pointed out the current COVID-19 case isn’t you unique to the Maldives and the government needs to impose pay cuts. He also said there should not be any public official who earns more than MVR 20,000 or MVR 25,000 even if it’s the president himself.
During the online session, he stated the president expense is taken care of by the state and he should refrain from taking a salary for the next six months. He also highlighted that parliament members should also take pay cuts and must cut down to MVR 20,000 with an additional bonus of MVR 500 for attending Parliament. He also pointed the same should apply to political appointees.
Saleem said the finance minister wants to run the state with high expenditures rather than cutting cost. He expressed concerns over the passed budget and stated this would have very negative effects in the long run.
