Minister of Planning and infrastructure, Mohamed Aslam has proposes to provide citizenship to foreign nationals.
The idea was brought during a virtual meeting of the parliament committee on national development and national heritage. The main focus of the meeting was to inquire about a plan to develop the economy to avoid over-dependency on tourism.
He highlighted that the agricultural sector might be a strengthen but noted that it might not have as much effect as tourism.
He also revealed that there are foreign nationals who are interested to acquire Maldivian citizenship. The minister pointed out its a good idea to give out passports. He did not propose the following but he stated that its a good idea to give some sort of residency for investors in the country.
Aslam has emphasised that this was his personal opinion but not the governments but its something to consider.
Earlier Ruling party MP Medhu Henveyru constituency Ali Azim has also proposed to provide citizenship to foreign nationals. According to support from two government political figures show that this would be a government policy they would consider.
