The Criminal Court on Sunday former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s hearing until his legal team can meet Yameen in Maafushi Prison.
During a hearing held virtually on Sunday over the bribery charges against the former president, presiding judge Ahmed Shakeel stated that the Maldives Correctional Services will be ordered to facilitate the meeting.
The hearing was delayed due to his legal team being unable to share and discuss various documents related to his charges.
Yameens’s lawyers and former deputy, Dr. Mohamed Jameel stated that due to additional documents submitted by state prosecutors. He has disagreed with the scheduled regarding the hearing until the legal team can meet Yameen.
The prosecutors and Yameen’s attorney’s have both agreed that Yameen has not yet met with his lawyers. According to Judge Shakeel hearing shall resume within 15 days after Yameen would be granted to opportunity to meet his counsel.
After is sentencing in 2019 which landed the former president in jail the High Court has accepted his appeal on December 18, 2019 and currently the case still ongoing.
