President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Wednesday has establishes a government-owned company named Regional Airports Company Ltd.
According to the President Office, the company is intended to “looking the operations of regional airports developed by the government and ensuring that all airports are operate in an efficient on a sustainable basis”.
This includes Velana International Airport which puts a total of 16 airports scattered across the Maldives which would fall under the new mandate of the newly established company.
Prior to the following, some of airports are managed by the private companies while most were operated by the companies which the state is shareholdered.
Within the year 2020, the state has inaugurated four new regional airport including Funadhoo Airport in Shaviyani Atoll, Madivaru Airport in Lhaviyani Atoll,

However, no international airports were unveiled this year due to the travel restrictions because of COVID-19 pandemic.
